ARCHITECT USMAN KARAYE UMARU (fnia)

Usman Karaye Umaru, an architect and the Chief Executive of D&B Limited, was born in December 1956, at Karaye town, Karaye Local Government of Kano State.

He studied Architecture in the then Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and obtained MSc Arch in 1983; attended Advanced Diploma in Business Management course at the UNILAG in 1996; Advanced Management course at Lagos Business School in 1998; studied and obtained master’s degree in Project Management from the University of Reading, UK, in 2008.

Umaru worked with the then Nigerian Security Organization (NSO) between 1984 and 1989 after serving NYSC at the Lagos State Property and Development Corporation (LSDPC) between 1983 and 1984. While in the employment of NSO, he designed and participated in the design and construction supervision of various security projects.

On leaving public service in 1989, Umaru and his partner, set up and managed Ultimate Design Consortium Limited, which designed and administered the construction contract of a number of projects including AP Plaza, Security Ink Factory, Residences for the Management Staff of NDIC, and more. Architect Umaru also founded D&B Limited in 1995 as a firm for initiating, designing, and constructing projects thereby making it a one-stop shop for clients. Some of the projects handled or are being handled include the 12-Storey River Plaza Complex, CBD; 150-Bed Hospital at Giginyu, Kano; Kenya High Commission, CBD; Governor’s Lodge for Kano, Asokoro; CBN Branch, Gombe; 200-Bed Hospital, Damaturu, and many more.

Umaru participated and is currently partaking in a number of endeavours including being on the Board of Directors of the defunct Finbank Plc; Board member of Resort Savings and Loans Plc; Director on the Board of Songhai Health Trust Limited; Chair of the Board of Directors of Comerel Travels and Tours Limited; Member, Committees of Vision 2010 and National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan; Member various Committees of the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON); Member (Designate) on ARCON Council; Member, various Committees of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA); Author and presenter of various professional papers under the Continuous Professional Development Programme (CPDP) for both NIA and ARCON. He has also received more than five professional meritorious awards.

Architect Umaru is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects and is happily married.
